Campaign Priorities:
Impact of Private Funding

Information Literacy Education

Goal: $1,000,000

In its first two years, the Information Literacy Education (ILE) online learning space is off to an impressive start. Nearly 5,000 undergraduates have been served and currently there is 98% returning instructor participation. The potential for growth is great. Private funding allows The Libraries to:

  • hire additional librarians since the number of users served by the library instruction program has grown by about 140% in the last five years.
  • hire student employees to help create ILE component tutorials and to free up librarian time so that they may assist other students and instructors.
  • upgrade to a more productive tutorial development software, to purchase software licenses, and to upgrade student computing equipment; current computers are five years old and have difficulty running today’s software.
  • create an endowment which will provide essential funding to cover future needs.

Digital Library

Goal: $1,000,000

Although The Libraries have made great strides over the last decade in collecting and developing digital materials, particularly in comparison to our academic library peers, it is expensive to maintain the collections and to expand the content for the future. Private gifts allow The Libraries to:

  • hire technical and subject experts to support the quickly expanding program.
  • fund equipment to strengthen digital collections.
  • upgrade the technologies necessary to have a current and effective web presence.
  • clean and preserve WSU sports films and migrate them to digital formats.
  • develop and deliver information to the WSU community and the world.
  • create an endowment which will provide essential funding to cover future needs.

Rare Books and
Special Collections

Goal: $1,000,000

Increasingly what distinguishes major academic libraries from each other are their rare books and unique collections. WSU already has impressive special collections, including hundreds of gift collections awaiting processing and description. Private gifts allow The Libraries to:

  • hire technical and subject experts to work with rare materials and to advise faculty and students in their use.
  • process, catalog, and digitize donated collections.
  • acquire new materials and expand current collections.
  • repair and conserve rare books and maps.
  • upgrade MASC’s exhibit area and reading room facilities.
  • create an endowment which will provide essential funding to cover future needs.

Spaces and Places

Goal: $500,000

WSU Libraries have begun making upgrades to group study places and public spaces in order to provide additional and better opportunities for individual and group work in safe and supportive settings. Private funding provides for:

  • computers, scanners, and printers.
  • productivity software, such as PowerPoint and Photoshop.
  • white boards and electronic screens.
  • comfortable seating and work tables.
  • a variety of closed and open work spaces.
  • an endowment which will provide essential funding to cover future needs.

Student Employment

Goal: $500,000

Not everyone is qualified for a scholarship so many students must have a job in order to pay for tuition, books, food, and housing while attending school. Private funding allows The Libraries to:

  • hire more undergraduates, giving them the opportunity to continue their education.
  • award more internships to graduate students, many of whom are providing skilled technical assistance based on their areas of graduate research.
  • deliver a higher quality of service to all patrons because more assistance is available.
  • create an endowment which will provide essential funding to cover future needs.
