PACIFIC-NAVY WAR MEMORIAL

Designed in 1982, the Pacific-Navy War Memorial (sculptor V. Nenazhivin, architect A. Sandok) commemorates the outstanding services rendered Russia by its Pacific Navy.  In the center of the memorial there is the legendary submarine S-59 (“C-59,” in Russian) with its eternal flame, established here in 1975.   This submarine participated in the Great Patriotic War, as World War II is known in Russia.  It patrolled the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans all the way to the North Sea, sinking twelve enemy vessels.  The crew was awarded numerous orders, and Captain G. I. Shchedrin was named a Hero of the USSR.

Submarine S-59 is now a museum, where along with exhibits on the glorious exploits of the Pacific Navy there are objects, maps, and charts showing the history of Soviet and Russian submarine construction.   Visitors may look into the periscope as well as touch the sailors’ berths, thereby experiencing (in a small way) the authentic atmosphere of a genuine submarine.
