Biography/History

WSU News is the central news office for Washington State University. The roots of the department date to 1907, when students with newspaper experience began sending news to northwest press on a volunteer basis. This informal start evolved into the Office of Publication, and in 1946 the College News Bureau was split off from that. WSU News and its predecessors have had varied responsibilities and ties over the years. During the earliest years of its existence the Office of Publication was loosely associated with the college’s journalism program. During World War II it acquired responsibility for the college’s alumni newsletter (the PowWow) and the athletic news service, though those were returned to their original departments following the war.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of thirty large (25 inches x 20 inches) scrapbooks, each approximately 600 pages. They were collected by the WSU News Bureau as a research file, and are constructed of newspaper clippings relating to Washington State University's activities. The newspaper clippings are primarily from the northwest, but some articles are from much further afield.

Due to the age of the clippings and the glue used in pasting them into the scrapbooks, many of the clippings are coming loose. Care should be used in moving and in opening these volumes. As time allows, consideration should be given to reboxing them.

Arrangement

The collection is organized chronologically. Most of the collection forms one series of consecutive books, but two scrapbooks (in the 1975-1976 years) are sports only and overlap the others, and one set of unbound materials properly belongs in the middle of another bound book. In those cases, the scrapbooks were interfiled by starting date.
