Biography/History

The Office of the Provost at Washington State University is responsible for providing academic leadership for the school. The use of the name at WSU dates to about 1978 when the Office of the Vice President – Academic was retitled as the Provost, but obviously administration over academic functions dates to the first days of the college, when that function was held by the school President.

Accreditation of the colleges and universities of the United States began in the 1950s, when the federal government became more involved in college funding and sought evidence the schools they were funding were qualified and were providing the educations the promised. The accreditation process was placed in the hands of regional higher education membership organizations; for schools in the state of Washington that was the Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools. While that organization has since gone through a variety of names, in the late 2010s it is known as the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Arrangement

The papers are arranged in two series. Series one is materials originating with or collected by the Provost’s Office in conducting accreditation work. These papers are arranged chronologically and are primarily finished reports; the materials from 1997-1999 comprise both working files and finished reports.

Series two is reports originating in WSU departments or elsewhere in the state, primarily collected and used by the Office of the Provost as supporting or research documentation in conducting the 1997-1999 accreditation process. These are arranged loosely in an alphabetical subject-based order.
