Historical Sketch:

Courses in forestry were listed in the first catalog (published in 1891) of Washington State University, then Washington Agricultural College and School of Science. For fifteen years of forestry courses were variously listed among the offerings of the departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, and Economics. By 1907 the number of classes taught had increased to the point that a school of Forestry was organized. In 1912 the School of Forestry was reorganized on departmental level and incorporated into the College of Agriculture. The Department was again reorganized in 1917. This year marked the climax of many years of controversy between the University of Washington and Washington State University over authority for major lines of instruction. Subsequent legislation authorized only the University of Washington to grant degrees in Forestry, Commerce, Architecture and Journalism. However, WSU was permitted to continue a forestry instructional program within the College of Agriculture. Despite its importance, no records exist in the departmental files to document this controversy. In 1922 the department name changed from Forestry to the Department of Forestry and Range Management. And in 1961, legislative action amended the 1917 law to authorize Forest Management as a major line of work at Washington State University.

Chairmen of the Department of Forestry and Range Management: George L. Clothier 1912-1916, Francis G. Miller 1917-1919, Arlie Decker 1918-1919, E. H. Steffen 1919-1954, John P. Nagle 1954-1967, Grant A. Harris 1967-

Arrangement

The records of the Department of Forestry and Range Management are arranged in five series. The first series, correspondence, is divided into three sub-series: Departmental, Faculty, and Nursery. The Departmental correspondence is arranged chronologically from 1948 through 1973, with the bulk of the material from 1967 to 1973. This sub-series includes general departmental correspondence, inter- and intra-departmental administrative correspondence, committee material, minutes of meetings, memoranda, student correspondence, requests for information by prospective students and the general public, reports, and job applications. Faculty correspondence is arranged alphabetically by faculty member and chronologically within each faculty member's material. This sub-series includes material from 1934 through 1967, with the bulk of the correspondence in the period 1957 through 1967. The majority of the material in this sub-series is the correspondence of John P. Nagle, chairman from1954 through 1967, and Grant A. Harries, Nagle's successor. This sub-series includes professional and some personal correspondence, memoranda, and minutes of meetings. The Nursery correspondence is arranged chronologically from July 1957 through May 1959; it includes material on the operation of the nursery and contains tree and shrub orders by Washington state residents.

The second series, administrative files, is arranged alphabetically by topic, and covers the period 1912 through 1968 with the bulk of the material in the period from the mid-1950's to the mid-1960's. Included in the administrative files are accreditation, committee, and budget materials, faculty service reports, careers and newsletter material, alumni news, annual departmental and faculty reviews, and annual reports.

Series three, subject file, is arranged alphabetically by subject and includes material from 1939 through 1971 with the majority of the material from the mid-1950's to the mid-1960's. Included is the subject file is correspondence from the national forestry and science organizations, legislative files, material on Fort Columbia, woodlot marketing information, and records from the Washington State University Institute of Agricultural Sciences Forestry, Range, Wildlife, and Water Resources Advisory Board.

The fourth series, nursery is arranged alphabetically by topic, and covers the period from 1926 through 1960, with the emphasis on material from the 1950's. Included in this series are files on the Clarke-McNary law; inventories, price lists, and mailing lists; shelterbelt and windbreak information; and tree orders.

The fifth and final series, research, is divided into two sub-series: Research Projects and General Research and Reports. The Research Projects sub-series is arranged numerically by project number with the general project progress reports placed at the beginning of the sub-series. The material in this sub-series covers the period from the 1950 through 1962. The second sub-series, General Research and Reports, is arranged alphabetically by subject and covers the period 1916 through 1964. The major research areas are bud confirmation and growth, general tree research, and weed control experiments.
