The State College of Washington’s Extension Service was authorized by the state in 1913, primarily as a means for the college to reach farmers and homemakers who could not come to Pullman. A 1919 reorganization added a focus on non-agricultural extension, the General Extension Service. This department uses a variety of methods to reach students who could not attend the college in person in daytime hours. These included classes offered in other cities, notably Spokane, Tri-Cities, and at various Experiment Stations; night courses; workshops, institutes, and conferences; and correspondence classes offered by mail. The General Extension Service would eventually morph through the Office of Continuing University Studies (1975), Continuing Education and Public Service (between 1982 and 1985); Extended Degree Program (within the Office of Continuing University Studies); Distance Degree Program (2001); WSU Online (2010); and the Global Campus (2013).

Acquisition Information

The materials in this collection were compiled and preliminarily listed on July 3, 1979, by someone with initials P.M.G. They were moved to Washington State University Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC) sometime prior to 2001, but their precise provenance is unknown.

Processing Information

The collection was processed in July, 2016 by University Archivist Mark O’English. A small amount of supplemental readings, not associated with any of the courses in this collection, were discarded in processing. Ten additional course guides which had been individually retained in WSU Publications 83 (General Extension Service) were incorporated into this collection at that time.
