Biography/History

After World War II, Washington State College experienced a population boom which required rapid construction of student housing. Four men's dormitories known as the Quad were constructed in 1946 and 1947, and originally known as North, South, East, and West Houses, though most would later acquire other names. North House was constructed in 1946, from war surplus housing which had been located at Camp Farragut in Northern Idaho. It became known as Esquire House, then returned to being North House, then became Sherwood House. In 1963 it became a temporary home for a campus fraternity, and was finally demolished in early 1964; French Administration Building was built on that spot a few years later. The Quad area was also known colloquially as Mud Hollow.
