Office History:

The office of University Architect began with the appointment of Rudolf Weaver in 1911. Weaver served as Professor of Architectural Engineering and in summers and at other times was the in-house architect for several campus buildings -- President's House, Wilson Hall, Carpenter Hall, McCroskey Hall, Community Hall, and Stimson Hall.

Stanley Smith replaced Weaver as University Architect in 1923 and continued as such until 1947. As had Weaver, Smith worked both as a professor and as an architect and construction supervisor. His work with campus buildings during this period is documented in this sequence of records. Smith campus projects were: Commons, completion of Troy Hall (begun by architect Julius Zittel), rebuilding the barn now called Lewis Alumni Center, (following destruction by fire), Duncan Dunn Hall, Bohler Gym, Memorial Hospital, White Hall, Hollingberry Field House, Stock Judging Pavilion, Waller Hall, Steam Plant, Pine Manor, Wilmer-Davis Hall, and Smith Gym, the last two with the assistance of Yakima/Seattle Architect John Maloney. Part of the wooden football stadium was Smith's architectural work, as were various street building and campus planning projects of the 1920s and 1930s. The final building of Smith's design was the L.J. Smith Agricultural Engineering Building, built in 1946.

Smith also prepared preliminary architectural work for several buildings on which the main architectural work was done by architectural firms working on commission. These buildings were Fulmer Hall (by Whitehouse and Price), Science Hall (by Archibald Rigg), McCoy Hall (by Henry Bertleson), Wegner Hall (by Whitehouse and Price) and Dana Hall (also by Whitehouse and Price). Smith also began the project that led to the building called Holland Library, designed by his former associate John Maloney.

In 1947, the increased load of building work at WSC led to a division of tasks, with Smith concentrating on his position as Head of the Department of Architectural Engineering. His place as University Architect was assumed by Philip Keene, who was then working on campus as a construction supervisor. In 1967, the University Architect's office took the name Facilities Planning Department.

Conditions Governing Access note

The Collection is open for research use.

Immediate Source of Acquisition note

Records of the University Architect were discovered in the attic of Carpenter Hall in November of 1988 when the building was being vacated for remodeling. Previous to that time common opinion held that these records had not survived and that the earliest extant records of building at WSU were those beginning about 1945 (Archives 14). However, pre-1945 records apparently had been stored in the attic of Carpenter Hall by Stanley Smith at the time that his various jobs were separated and the office of the University Architect was relocated in the Administration Annex Building. Other records were included among those accessioned in 1988. Some were concerned with Smith's activities as a teacher of Architecture and others concerned the small private architectural practice he operated. These records have been separated from those of the University Architect and located elsewhere within the University Archives. These records were accessioned as UA 1988-47. Later a small sequence, UA 1991-33, was added.

Processing Information note

Robert W. Hadlow processed these records from March through May 1995.
