- Contains correspondence, subject files, texts of speeches, and other records typical of a University Presidents office.
Organizational History:
The functions of the President's office are explained in the documents that describe earlier sequences of the office's records; see Archives 158, for the full statement.
Arrangement note
The records of the President's Office that are coded as Archives 223 continue the series of correspondence and subject files begun in 1892, and extend the subject filing system begun about 1945. The arrangement is one of alphabetical filing, with annual cut-offs. The main sequence is subject files is dated 1987 to 1991. Please note that certain subject files dated from 1970 through 1986 were included with the records from 1987 at the time of transfer to the archives. These have been left in that position in the arrangement, rather than refiling them to their "original location." Many of these files apparently were "active" as late as 1986; hence their position in the filing scheme. In addition the records from this period include a series of texts of speeches delivered by President Samuel Smith, which are arranged as the earliest of the records, and a series of reports, 1960-78, transferred with the records for 1988.

President's Office files are transferred to Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections according to university record schedules. The records described here and maintained as Archives 223 were transferred in 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996 (UA93-10, UA94-14, UA95-02, and UA96-04).
Processing Information note
Jean Johnson processed the earlier accessions in January 1996, with the remaining accessions later processed by Baodi Zhou in May and June of 1996.
