- Files of the President's office consist chiefly of correspondence and related memoranda or reports. Contains records dating from the last years of the Compton administration, the beginning of the French administration and the interim period of William A. Pearl.
Organizational History:
The University President is the chief executive of the University and the Secretary of the Board of Regents. The duties of the office are are explained for archival users in the preface to the finding aid/guide for Archives 159, President's Office Records, 1915-1945.
The records in this group -- Archives 12 -- span the later years of the administration of Wilson M. Compton and the early years of the administration of C. Clement French, along with the short term of Acting President William Pearl in 1951. This situation reflects an apparent decision by President Compton, taken in 1948, to maintain the files as those of the office and not of the individual who held it. This policy ended an older practice whereby the President's files tended to become known as the "Bryan Papers" or the "Holland Papers." Notwithstanding this policy, many researchers continue to view the presidential files in the mode of personal papers, which means that this group, Archives 12, is informally the "Compton Papers, Part 2," and the "French Papers, Part 1."
Scope and Contents note
Files of the President's office consist chiefly of correspondence and related memoranda or reports. It is retained in its original order of alphabetical subject files, closed annually. The subject headings for some parts of this group, Archives 12, were lost when the President's Office staff closed, weeded and compacted files for the earlier years of the period covered by the records.
