Historical Data:
The Department of Speech of Washington State University, established in 1923, has produced numerous plays since 1925 as a function of that department. Maynard Lee Daggy headed the Speech Department from its inception in 1923 until 1946 and directed many of the earlier productions. Departmental theatrical finances, publicity, and publications were the responsibility of the University Theatre office located in Bryan Hall. In the early 1970s a new site for University Theatre productions and the Department of Speech was constructed and subsequently named Daggy Hall. In addition to regular theatre productions, special production units including Children's Theatre, Stage II Productions, Final Stage, The Black Ensemble, and Pullman's New Summer Palace have been active. Most of these appear to have been sporadic, were occasionally short lived, and can be subsumed under the regular theatre series. However, the Summer Palace series is a continuing and consistent popular success.
Arrangement note
The records of the University Theatre are divided into two separate series: University Theatre Productions, 1965-1978; and the New Summer Palace Productions, 1969-1978. Series I consists of regular University Theatre productions from January of 1965 through December of 1978, and includes those plays produced by all of the special production units except for Summer Palace. Pullman's New Summer Palace Productions, summer of 1969 through summer of 1978, comprise Series II. Both series are arranged chronologically by date of production, retaining (for the most part) their original order. Each acid-free folder is labeled with the folder number, production name/date, or other heading (publicity, attendence records, etc.) as appropriate. A folder containing undated and/or unreferenced material has been placed at the begining of each series. Other folders containing non-show specific material or information also precede the actual production folders in each series. Folders may contain such things as: programs, ticket/attendance records, photographs, scenic design, rehearsal schedules, and correspondence. Representation of these item catagories is widely varied in any given folder. Some play productions may be missing and neither series should be considered complete.
