Biography/History

Washington State Magazine was created in 2001 as a color magazine-style alumni magazine for Washington State University. Prior to Washington State Magazine, the university’s alumni community had been served by black-and-white newsprint publications, notably Hilltopics (1970-2001), and the Powwow and the Alumnus (1910-1969).

Scope and Content

The collection consists of approximately 3500 color slides which illustrate activities related to Washington State University in the early 2000s, as covered in the Washington State Magazine alumni journal. The majority of the photographs were taken by WSU’s Photo Services.

Arrangement

The collection consists of subject-based folders, organized chronologically by the date of the issue of Washington State Magazine which published the article relevant to the photos. A few folders which do not appear to have seen publication are at the back, in a separate chronological series. Within each folder, the slides are retained in their original orders.

Acquisition Information

The images in this collection were transferred to the Washington State University Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC) by Larry Clark, editor of Washington State Magazine, on June 7, 2019, and retained as UPC-1903. They were processed in July and August of 2019 by Kaitlyn Van Vleet and University Archivist Mark O’English.

Processing Information

Materials came in subject-based order, and those subjects were retained, though an overall chronological organization was imposed on the folders. As the slides were often repetitive, approximately one fourth of the collection (the more repetitious slides) was discarded in processing.
