Howard C. Burgess compiled this photograph collection. After graduating from Washington State College (later University) in 1916 he served in the military before working for County Extension in Kelso, Washington, and Madison County, Montana. In 1930 he became a County Agent with the Extension Service in Walla Walla, and remained there until his retirement in 1958. In recognition of his service he was made Marshall of Walla Walla’s 1964 Frontier Days Grand Parade.

This collection consists of approximately 150 photographs of Walla Walla, Washington and the surrounding area, collected by Howard Burgess. Photographs document public scenes in Walla Walla and Washington's Inland Northwest region during the early twentieth century, and include horticultural exhibits at the Spokane Interstate Fair, scenes from the Walla Walla Pioneer Pageant, the Southeastern Washington Fair, and Whitman College, as well as various photographs of agricultural and dairy produce in the Walla Walla Valley.

The collection was received unordered. Many photographs are labeled with a brief description but few contain dates. Photographs are foldered by subject and then by date when possible.

This collection is open and available for research use. Copyright restrictions may apply.
