Biography/History

Sandra Kay “Sandy” Saffell came to WSU in 1963 as a college freshman, and was accepted to Alpha Delta Pi (hereafter ADPi) during that fall’s rush. She was her sorority’s vice-president and pledge trainer during fall of 1965, and graduated in 1967 with a B.A. in Recreation. For one semester, fall of 1964, she lived in Streit Hall when she lost her sorority eligibility for academic reasons.

After graduation, Saffell remained active with her sorority, serving as an advisor while living in Las Vegas (1967-1968), St. Louis (1968-1971), and Europe (1971-1974). She has remained active as an alumnus since.

Biography/History

The Theta Kappa sorority was organized on the WSU (then WSC) campus on October 9, 1909. Just under three years later, on October 5, 1912, it became the Upsilon chapter of the national Alpha Delta Pi (ADPi) sorority. This was WSC’s second national sorority chapter. During the timeframe of this collection the sorority was located at 609 NE Linden; as of 2017 it remains in the same location, though the address changed in the 1970s to 725 NE Linden St.

Scope and Content

The collection consists primarily of correspondence, photographs, publications, and ephemera from Sandy Saffell’s experiences at Washington State University from 1963-1967. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, and most of the materials relate to that. She remained active as an ADPi alumni after graduation, and most of the post-graduation materials are from her ADPi alumni activities.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged into three major series: Papers and other printed materials, Photographs, and Realia.

The paper series is broken into three subseries based on their focus: ADPi, WSU, or Off-campus, and materials are arranged alphabetically by subject within those. For the ADPi, there are a couple of informal subseries of Alumni materials and National materials, placed after the other ADPi papers.

Photographs are organized chronologically, with sets of items located in a date range placed chronologically at the end of their possible dates. In a very few cases, relevant photographs have been included in the paper series.
