Biography/History

The Chicanx Latinx Student Center (CLSC) was established at Washington State University in the early 1970s with a mission to promote self-determination for Chicanx and Latinx students at the university. The center was established following student protests in 1970 that drew attention to racial inequities and the need for specialized services to attract and support Latinx students.

The CLSC frequently collaborates with student groups including the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/a de Aztlan (MEChA) as well as Mujeres Unidas, CAMARADAS, and the Chicana/o Latina/o Student Alliance (ChiLaStAl).

MEChA was created to raise awareness among WSU students about Chicanx/Latinx culture, society, and heritage, to contribute to the understanding of American minority groups through educational, social, and cultural events, and to further educational and economic opportunities for oppressed and marginalized students. MEChA plays an important role in organizing Semana de la Raza and CASHE, a youth conference meant to promote Latinx access to higher education.

Mujeres Unidas represents the interests and issues of Chicanas and Latinas at WSU and organizes activities and opportunities of interest to multicultural women students including elementary school visits, speaker programs, and Semana de la Raza events.

CAMARADAS is a graduate and professional organization for Chicana/o and Latina/o students. It was established in 1993 to raise awareness about issues of importance to Chicanx and Latinx students. The group seeks to support graduate students, foster mentorship for undergraduate students, act as a proactive agent in the community, and provide opportunities for research collaboration.

The Chicana/o Latina/o Student Alliance (ChiLaStAl) is an umbrella organization for all groups at WSU that are Latinx-based or related. It seeks to create unity for all Latinx student groups.
