Biography/History
When the Preserve Our Paradise Association (POP) was organized in 1979, its purpose was "to achieve and preserve a harmonious relationship between our people and their natural environment" (from draft of POP bylaws). In 1979, Paradise Prairie, an area of approximately 25,000 acres near U.S. Highway 195 between Spokane and Spangle (WA), had approximately 475 homes, and residents of the area were eligible for membership in POP. As the City of Spokane planned for future growth, parts of this area were identified as candidates for higher-density residential development and/or potential annexation. As a grassroots organization, POP monitored city and county planning activities, and proposals for specific development in the area. They actively participated in opportunities for public comment, and corresponded with local government officials, often raising questions and offering information, especially with regard to environmental and quality-of-life concerns.
The group was active until at least 1982, the latest records included in this collection.
