Biography/History

James Burton Russell (1918-1983) was born in Tacoma, Washington and graduated from Stadium High School before attending Washington State College. After graduating, Russell served in the United States Navy from 1941 to 1946 where he worked for the Naval Research Laboratory. His work eventually led to a patent which is included in this collection. Following the war, Russell moved to Davenport, Iowa where he lived and worked until his death in 1983.

This collection consists of papers related to James Russell's life and his work for the United States Navy and afterwards. It includes reports authored by Russell as well as personal papers (military records, marriage license, and other documents).

Florence Moyer of St. Luke's Episcopal Church (Tacoma, WA) came into the possession of these papers following Russell's death in 1983, and donated them to the Washington State University Libraries in 1999 (MS.1999.42).
