Biography/History
All three projects represented in this collection are hydroelectric developments of Washington Water Power Company (now Avista Corporation), an investor-owned utility.
Monroe Street Dam: This was the first hydroelectric development completed by Washington Water Power Company, at a natural waterfall on the Spokane River; it began generating power in 1890. The dam was rebuilt in 1974.
Nine Mile Dam: This project, originally developed in 1908 to supply power for the Spokane and Inland Empire electric railway system, was purchased by Washington Water Power Company in 1925.
Long Lake Power Station: Another early hydroelectric development, the Long Lake Dam was completed in 1915.
