Biography/History

Walter J. Clore worked as a horticulturist for WSU from 1936 to 1976, mainly at WSU's Irrigated Agricultural Research Extension Center (IAREC) in Prosser, Washington. His viticultural research, especially on the problems of european wine grapes, played an indispensable role in the expansion of Washington viticulture. After retirement from WSU, Dr. Clore worked as consultant to the wine industry, most notably for Ste. Michelle Vineyards. Dr. Clore has often been referred to as the "father of the Washington wine industry."

Scope and Content

Correspondence, research notes, book chapter drafts, and printed documents relative to the history of the Washington wine industry. Many items pertain to the book written with Ronald Irvine, The Washington Wine Project, often called the "Wine History."

Arrangement

The papers remain in three sequences established by Clore. The first is chiefly research materials and notes used in Clore's book on the history of wine in Washington. The second is a general correspondence sequence, arranged alphabetically in the original folders, with this order continued. The third sequence largely concerns the production of the wine history book and other publications. Within the first and third sequence, materials are arranged in sequences of related folders, but no overall arrangement is employed. Many folder titles have been augmented or supplied by the Libraries staff, as the original folders bore no labels or abbreviated labels.
