Biography/History

The Maynard-Price Post #52 of the American Legion was first established in 1919. Charter members of the group included: Cleo Miller, Roy H. Butler, Harry A. Stuppler, W. J. Broehl, Frank Fulkerth, Clem A. Yelle, George Gannon, and Frank W. Zink. The Maynard-Price Post of Pullman was part of the larger Whitman County Organization #1 which was formed during the same time period. Many other area towns also had posts, including: Colfax, Colton, LaCrosse, Rosalia, Tekoa and Garfield. The Pullman Post was named for two local men killed in action during World War I, Boyd Maynard and Ivan Price.

The main goals of the Pullman American Legion included gaining government and public support for veterans and community betterment. One of the specific projects of the post was the construction of the Legion Hall/Medical Center building at Blaine and Grand streets in Pullman in the early 1950's. The building was later sold in 1969. The Legion also sponsored many children's programs and Summer Legion Baseball.

The Maynard-Price Post #52, 1920-1969, 1978 section contains post record on activities, new building project, committees, correspondence, finances, and membership.

The Whitman County Organization #1, 1920-1923 group contains the earliest records on the Legion. It is comprised of bulletins, by-laws, correspondence, minutes and the Report of the Finance Officer.

Arrangement

The records of the Pullman American Legion have been divided into four groups: American Legion, 1950-1954; Maynard-Price Post, 1920-1969, 1978; Whitman County Organization #1, 1920-1923; and Membership Cards, 1922-1950.

All records in the first three sections are filed alphabetically by subject. The papers contained within the folders have been left in their original order wherever possible.

The fourth group, Membership Cards, 1922-1950 were separated out for processing convenience. This group is made up of six file drawers of 3" X 5" cards, which remain in their original sequence. Also contained in Box #3 is a large photograph of Legion members from 1921.
