Scope and Content

This collection consists of a single item, "Pathogenic Investigations on Citellus Began April 20, 1906" (typescript). It is a transcription produced in 1938 from an undated manuscript, and the author is not named. The manuscript was "found among the laboratory notes of Dr. S.B. Nelson, Formerly of Washington State College, Pullman." The document reports the results of a laboratory experiment commenced in 1906, continuing earlier work by Nelson and C.V. Piper on a disease observed in ground squirrels (Citellus townsendi) in Eastern Washington in 1896. Nelson and Piper isolated the pathogen, which they named "bacillus L," and the unnamed author of this report continued their research, investigating the pathogen for possible use in squirrel extermination.
