Biography/History

William Z. Foster (1881-1961) served as head of the Communist Party of the United States, and was a three-time candidate for the United States Presidency in 1924, 1928, and 1932. In 1909 he joined the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and gained national recognition for organizing the steel strike of 1919. Foster and eleven other members of the National Board of the Communist party were indicted under the Smith Act in 1948, but he was not brought to trial due to a heart ailment. He died in Moscow on September 1, 1961 and was interred in the Kremlin.
