- This collection contains historical materials from the towns of Garfield and Elberton, Washington.
Scope and Content
This collection contains historical materials from the towns of Garfield and Elberton, Washington, as well as other Whitman County locations, collected by Nick Manring. The collection primarily consists of photographs and negatives, newspaper articles and clippings, correspondence, school and regional memorabilia, as well as published and unpublished histories. The collection also includes financial documents and various artifacts from Whitman County businesses.

Box 1: Papers pertaining to news in and around Garfield, Washington, including a Whitman County Directory for 1939-1940, copies of the school newsletter the Garfield Line between 1966 and 1977, as well as newspaper issues: the Garfield Enterprise newspaper (1915, 1938, 1921, 1924, 1927, 1945, 1974) and The Colfax Commoner (1915), and the Idahonian (1987).

Box 1: Papers related to the towns of Garfield and Elberton, Washington, including school memorabilia and books, photographs and negatives, postcards, newspaper clippings, local correspondence (a majority of which connects to the Manring family), financial documents, as well as regional histories, between 1880 and 1988.
Box 2: Papers related to towns in Whitman County, Washington (primarily Garfield, Elberton, and Farmington), including school memorabilia and books, photographs and negatives, postcards, a scrapbook of Blanche McCroskey, newspaper clippings, business documents and artifacts, as well as regional histories, between the 1880s and 1970s.
Box 3: Papers and photographs related to the towns of Garfield and Palouse, Washington, including glass plate negatives of the Lewis Love farm and the Garfield community (circa 1913), newspaper clippings, local correspondence, and business and church documents (financial records for the Methodist Church in Garfield), between the 1880s and 1980s.
Box 4: Materials related to towns in Whitman County, Washington (primarily Garfield), including campaign and event buttons, glass plate negatives of the Lewis Love farm and the Garfield community (circa 1913), local calendars, and histories of the Palouse region, between 1900 and the 1990s.
Box 5: Papers related to the town of Garfield, Washington, and other Whitman County locations, including memorabilia, records, and histories of Garfield clubs (including the Ladies Aid Society of the M. G. Church from 1906-1963) and businesses, Whitman County auditor reports, telephone directories (1949 and 1985), deeds and claims (from Washington Territory and the state of Colorado), photographs and negatives related to the McCroskey house in Garfield, as well as correspondence from James Taylor Burcham (while in Alaska, 1905) and to Burcham from various sources (1905), and other miscellaneous correspondence related to people in Whitman County.

Box 7: Artifacts related to various companies and buildings in Whitman County, Washington, including materials from H. C. Eitel Drug Store, flour sacks, and printing plates.
Oversized Materials: Materials related to Garfield and Whitman County, Washington, including a labor strike sign, copies of the Garfield Enterprise newspaper (1901), photographs, calendars, and court documents (blank) from the Whitman County Court.
