Biography/History
Barbara Hutmacher Maclean retired in 1992 after a career as a journalist, writing for newspapers in the United States and South Africa. From 1974 to 1978, she worked as a reporter for the Daily Dispatch, a newspaper published in East London, South Africa. Shortly after leaving the Daily Dispatch, she published her book "In Black and White: Voices of Apartheid" (1980). From 1980 to 1992, she worked for the Wenatchee World newspaper in Wenatchee, WA. In 2003, she published "Strike a Woman, Strike a Rock: Fighting for Freedom in South Africa."
Scope and Content
This collection consists of materials related to Barbara Hutmacher Maclean's book, "In Black And White: Voices of Apartheid" (1980). It includes versions of the book manuscript, notes, collected research materials, and realia (beaded items and textile items, including necklaces, a belt, a skirt, and a satchel made and worn by members of the Xhosa people of South Africa).
