Fire Department
Records, 1922-2005

The logs and minutes of the Fire Department and photocopies of their scrapbooks were transferred from the Fire Department to the Washington State University Archives in two accessions in 1986-1987 (UA 1986-21 and UA 1987-20). The records were processed in October 2008 by University Archivist Mark O'English.

ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

The WSU Fire Department predates 1909; it was notable for initially being student managed and subsequently at least partially manned by student firemen. The WSU Fire Department was closed at the end of 2004, and its functions moved to the city of Pullman.

ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION

The House Logs serve as both scrapbooks and fire records of the department, while the House Meeting Minutes track administrative and day-to-day activities. Correspondence consists primarily of "thank you" letters from the college and community. Reminiscences consists of a a former fire fighter's look back at his time there in the 1950s. Clippings and Photographs consts of photocopies of the scrapbooks and photograph collection of the fire department.

RELATED COLLECTIONS

For most of its lifetime, the Fire Department, with police and ambulance services, were under the umbrella of the Safety Division; as such, relevant records may be found in Archives 123: Safety Division Records, 1950-1980. Following the closure of the Fire Department, further scrapbooks and records of the Fire Department were moved to the Police Department in early 2005 and remain there as of late 2008.
