E.J. Poulsen
Drawings, 1959-1964
This collection was received at WSU Libraries' Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections in 1998 (MS1998-39) from E.J. Poulsen's widow, Antoinette Poulsen. It was processed in August of 2010 by University Archivist Mark O'English.
HISTORY
Edward J. Poulsen was born in Chicago, IL, in 1910, and earned his Master of Fine Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1946, he came to Washington State College as a teacher and graphic artist. When the school changed its name to Washington State University in 1959, Poulsen designed their new seal, diploma, and letterheads, and supervised the casting of the Distinguished Alumnus Award medallion. He headed the Graphic Productions Service at the University's Holland Library. Poulsen passed away in 1989.
ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION
The collection consists of drawings, mock-ups, and other items primarily relating to the creation of the new seal for Washington State University after it changed its name from Washington State College (or the State College of Washington) in 1959. Also included is some biographical and other information regarding E.J. Poulsen, and a small amount of art and production pieces for other Washington Stater University works that he designed for. The organization of this small collection is primarily derived from format/size issues, with smaller items before (on top of) larger items. However, the final six items are those relating to WSU's seal design.
ACCESS
This collection is open and available for research use.
