Biography/History
The Nez Perce Music fieldwork materials were primarily collected from 1990-1991, and constitute a record of the sources and records that Judy Jones used for her dissertation "‘Women Never Used to War Dance’: Gender and Change in Nez Perce Music" (1995). Judy Jones worked in collaboration Dr. Loran Olsen of the Washington State University Faculty, who also conducted some of the interviews with the Nez Perce that are contained in this collection. A fuller account of how the Nez Perce Music fieldwork materials came to be generated can be found in Judy Jones’s dissertation, which also provides a detailed contextual narrative of her project.
Arrangement
The Nez Perce Music fieldwork materials have been arranged into five series. Series 1, Tape Recordings, is arranged alphabetically and then chronologically, and is divided into subseries 1.1) Audio Tapes, consisting of music and related discussions, and subseries 1.2) Videotapes, consisting of lectures. Series 2, Transcripts, is arranged alphabetically to correspond to Series 1, and consists of transcriptions of all the audio recordings and a portion of the videotapes. Series 3, Printed Materials, consists of photocopies of Nez Perce event programs, and is arranged alphabetically and then chronologically. Series 4, Fieldnotes, is arranged alphabetically and then chronologically, and is divided into subseries 4.1) Interviews, and 4.2) Events. Series 5, Photographs, is arranged alphabetically. Entries contain detailed descriptive information; some entries are cross-referenced.
