Biography/History
The Association for Faculty Women (AFW) originated in 1975. The forerunner of the group was the subcommittee on academic women of the Committee of Women, a Pullman organization founded in 1968. This early group proposed the first women's studies course at Washington State University and also secured modification of several other university policies changes that furthered faculty women's opportunities.
After AFW was formed it continued working on equity issues important to women in academe. Additionally, in 1984 the group began honoring outstanding women graduate students.
The association is active to date (as of 1999), and its highest priority for the future is to open up the university's decision-making positions to capable women.
