Washington State University
Guest User Policy

In addition to the criteria listed in WAC 504-40-020, a guest user must be 16 years of age or older. Acceptable forms of ID for guest users signing up for a user card include identification from a federal agency, state agency, or another academic institution.

Guest users will not be able to place automatic patron requests in Griffin or Cascade. Instead, they will go to a Libraries circulation desk, fill out a Recall Request card, and submit the card to the circulation desk.

A Libraries staff member will take the card and evaluate whether the request can be filled. Items available from other WSU libraries can be requested on the guest user's behalf. Additionally, checked out items will not be recalled for guest users. Items available at the EWU Library or at Cascade libraries should not be requested on the guest user's behalf. If the request can be filled, the staff member will place a hold in Griffin for the item, using either Millennium Circulation or the character-based versions of Griffin.

Upon receipt of the requested item, the Recall Request card is mailed to the patron, indicating that the item is available for pickup at a Libraries Circulation Desk.

If the Libraries circulation staff member decides that the request cannot be filled (for example, for an item available in Griffin only at the EWU Library or only available through another Cascade library), the staff member will write this information on the Recall Request card. The card will provide information to the guest user on the request, such as a referral to the interlibrary loan unit of the guest user's local library.

Libraries staff members at public services points should receive training on the request options available to guest users. Staff members at reference and circulation desks should be trained in interpreting the informational messages in Griffin and Cascade.
