Biography/History
Since four years after its 1890 founding, Washington State University participated in intercollegiate football. Filming of those competitions began in the 1920s and continues today.
Scope and Content
The collection includes films of football games played by the State College of Washington, and later, Washington State University from 1929-1979. The immense bulk of the films required weeding; therefore a selection policy, in cooperation with the Department of Athletics, was established. All films prior to 1961 were retained. From that date the selection policy includes all conference (PAC-8) games but excludes non-conference games. However, a few significant non-conference games were retained to the Department of Athletics for their use or disposal.
Arrangement
The WSU football game films are arranged chronologically within three series depending on whether or not they were wound on reels or placed in cans. The great majority of the films are properly wound on film reels and stored in film cans. A few films in series One are lacking film cans. The list of films gives the name of the opposing team and a parenthetical number which refers to the number of reels for each game listed. Color films are similarly indicated. In Series III the diameter of the film roll is given, in inches.
