Organizational History:
One of the functions of Washington State University's Office of the Vice President of Business is to manage the university's properties. These have included:
The Columbia River Orchards Foundation manages WSU orchard property in Wenatchee, originally donated to the university in 1972 by the Aluminum Company of America.
The North/South Ski Area in Benewah County, Idaho, is a property that has been owned or managed by the University or the Associated Students for several decades.
The Pullman shopping center was proposed about 1967. In 1973-1975, a commercial real estate firm contracted with the university to develop this property. The proposed development involved farm land located to the immediate north of Pullman in the Terra View Drive region. Much of the effort was contingent on relocation of roads and the building of a by-pass highway. When the road location project was withdrawn by the state, and when a competing shopping center constructed near the edge of Moscow, Idaho, the shopping center project was abandoned.
The Tree Research Center is an experiment station near Wenatchee. In the 1960s and early 1970s a USDA research facility was established in conjunction with the university's research center.
The Mt. St. Helens ash cleanup involved actions taken to remove ash from the WSU Pullman campus in the aftermath of the volcanic eruption in 1980.
