- Herbert M. Nakata joined the faculty of Washington State University in 1959, and served as chairman of the Department of Bacteriology and Public Health/Microbiology from 1968 to 1992. Herbert Nakata began preparing a history of the Bacteriology (Microbiology) department of Washington State University in the 1980s, completing a first version in 1985. He completed this greatly expanded version in 2002.

Biography/History
Herbert M. Nakata was born in 1930 in Pasadena, CA, to Russell and Fusayo Nakata. After receiving his B.S. degree in bacteriology from the University of Illinois in 1952, he entered the United States Army, serving in Korea. After completing his military service, he earned his M.S. (1956) and Ph.D. (1959), also from the University of llinois. Nakata joined the faculty of Washington State University in 1959, and served as chairman of the Department of Bacteriology and Public Health/Microbiology from 1968 to 1992. He retired from WSU in 1993.
Scope and Content
Herbert Nakata began preparing a history of the Bacteriology (Microbiology) department of Washington State University in the 1980s, completing a first version in 1985. He completed this greatly expanded version in 2002. In addition to an extensive narrative history, the manuscript also includes a substantial appendix of reference material. Volume 1 includes a detailed table of contents.
Arrangement
The manuscript retains Nakata's original organization in three volumes. Volumes 1 and 2 contain the narrative history, and Volume 3 contains the appendix.
