Biographical/Historical note

The Wenaha-Tucannon Wilderness Council was formed on March 11th, 1973. Its objective was to protect the magnificent Wenaha backcountry and surrounding roadless areas of the Umatilla National Forest. The Wenaha area is the last roadless refuge of the Blue Mountain elk herd and it protects the entire watershed of the Wenaha River and the upper portion of the Tucannon river.

The council represents conservation and sportsman organizations with over 500,000 members. Their concern over the effect of logging and road building upon the famous Blue Mountain elk herd was put into legislative action with two wilderness bills introduced by Senator Mark Hatfield and Representative Tom Foley in 1973. Both bills called for the Wenaha River and the Tucannon River to be designated wilderness areas.

James A. Kittrick was the Chairman of the Council.
