Charles Jay Gould, Jr., was born on February 28, 1912 in Eaton, Ohio and raised in Huntington, West Virginia. He attended high school and college in West Virginia graduating cum laude from Marshall College (now Marshall University) in 1934. He received an M.S. in Plant Pathology from Iowa State College in 1937 where he taught botany until 1941. In 1941 he joined the staff of the Western Washington Experimental Station in Puyallup, now the Western Washington Research and Extension Center (WWREC), as an assistant plant pathologist specializing in the control of Northwest turf and bulb disease. In 1942, he received his Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Iowa State College.
His significant accomplishments include organizing the first bulb growers short course in 1948, studying bulb diseases in the Netherlands as a Fulbright scholar in 1951, and organizing the first conference of turfgrass pathologists,as well as publishing nearly 350 articles dealing with various plant diseases. Dr. Gould retired from the WWREC in 1977. The following year Dr. Gould was named a Fellow in the American Phytopathological Society.
