Biographical/Historical note

Captain James Comstock was born in New York in 1838. He attended Carroll College in Wisconsin, and he became a private in the First Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry in 1861. He returned to Wisconsin after the Civil War and became a merchant, first in Wisconsin, then in Iowa, and finally in Spokane, Washington. He died in Spokane in 1918.

Scope and Contents note

This collection consists of Captain James Comstock's commissions and discharge, 1861-1864; literary and historical manuscripts of Comstock ("Shakespeare," "King Lear," "A Study of Macbeth," "Shakespeare vs. Bacon," "John A. Logan," "Gettysburg," "The Surprise at Shiloh," "Our Departed Comrades," "Warrior," "London," and "Topography of Athens"); a biographical booklet by Roland B. Botting in his series "Contributions to the History of the Pacific Northwest" entitled "James M. Comstock: Pioneer Citizen"; and Russell A. Bankson's pamphlet "The Story of a Store and a City," commemorating the 50th anniversary of Comstock's Crescent Store in Spokane.
