Biography/History

William Griffin Gnaedinger (1910-1995) was born in Wallace, Idaho on October 15, 1910. He graduated from Wallace High School in 1928 and from the University of Idaho in 1936 with a degree in education. After marrying Miss Irene Carlson, Gnaedinger moved to Lewiston, Idaho where he taught at junior high and high schools, in addition to working as a part-time audio-visual director.

Gnaedinger received his master's degree from Washington State University in 1940 while holding the position of Director of the Audio-Visual Center. Through this position he became instrumental in the development of the use of films and other media in classroom instruction in the Pacific Northwest. Gnaedinger was also one of the founders of the Washington Department of Audio Visual Instruction (WDAVI).

In 1941, Gnaedinger joined the U.S. Navy and was a training officer during World War II and served as a commander in the Naval Reserve. Following the war, he served on the Executive Board of the National Education Association's Division of Audio Visual Instruction (DAVI), 1962-1965.

He then moved into library administration at Washington State University as an Associate Director. While at WSU, Gnaedinger was active in the St. James Episcopal Church. He retired in 1974 and was awarded the title Associate Director Emeritus of Libraries.
