Biographical/Historical note
Patrick F. McManus (1933- ) is a writer from Spokane, Washington. He received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Washington State College, in 1956 and 1959 respectively. During his time at WSC, McManus was the editor of the Washington State Review and PowWow, WSC's alumni magazine. McManus then began a short career as an instructor of English and Journalism at Eastern Washington College and as a reporter on the Spokane television station KREM, soon finding his calling as a professional writer. His books include: A Fine and Pleasant Misery (1981), They Shoot Canoes, Don't They? (1982), Never Sniff a Gift Fish (1984), The Grasshopper Trap (1986), Rubber Legs and White Tail-Hairs (1988), The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw (1990), Real Ponies Don't Go Oink! (1992), The Good Samaritan Strikers Again (1993), How I Got This Way (1995), Never Cry "Arp!" And other Great Adventures (1996), Into the Twilight, Endlessly Grousing (1998), The Bear in the Attic (2003), The Blight Way: A Sheriff Bo Tully Mystery (2006), Kerplunk: Stories (2008), Avalanche: A Sheriff Bo Tully Mystery (2008), The Double-Jack Murders: A Sheriff Bo Tully Mystery (2009), The Huckleberry Murders: A Sheriff Bo Tully Mystery (2010).

This collection consists of professional and literary papers of author Patrick F. McManus.

These accessions include drafts and manuscripts for short stories, television scripts, and books: They Shoot Canoes, Don't They?, Kid Camping, Never Sniff a Gift Fish, The Grasshopper Trap, Rubber Legs and White Tail-Hairs, The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw, How I Got This Way, The Good Samaritan Strikes Again, The Bear in the Attic, Whatchagot Stew, Into the Twilight, Endless Grousing, and Real Ponies Don't Oink!. The collection also contains articles and issues of magazines, journals, newspapers, and newsletters that contain McManus' work: including Field and Stream, Spokesman Review, Spokane Magazine, Reader's Digest, Satellite Orbit, Outdoor Life, and True Magazine. Additionally, this collection contains class notes and papers from McManus' time as a student at Washington State College, along with fan mail, audio recordings of McManus' articles, incoming and outgoing correspondence, and VHS videorecordings of McManus interviews.

This collection of Patrick McManus's papers includes materials related to the following titles: Deer on the Bicycle (2000), Avalanche (2007), Double-Jack Murders (2009), Huckleberry Murders (2010), KERPLUNK! (2007), and The Blight Way (2006). In general, the collection consists of research files, drafts, proofs, and final published editions.

This is an unprocessed collection. It consists of multiple accessions received between 1979 and 2005: MS.1979.09, MS.1987.28, MS.2005.20. It has not yet been arranged.

Box 1. Correspondence, notes, school papers (1960s, 1950s), manuscript of master's thesis, television scripts, rejected articles, tear sheets of articles (especially Field and Stream), short stories, fan mail.
Box 2. Rough drafts of articles with notations and corrections; books and related publisher correspondence.
Box 3. Phonograph records of "current" articles for use by the blind.
